Husky Classic

Here are some results from The Flotrack Husky Classic this weekend at the Dempsey Center in Seattle. (I indicated former GSL runners with school's name in "()") Andrew Kimpel from NC and WSU, and Tylor Thatcher from CV and BYU ran 8:10 and 8:12 in the 3000. The Track Annual doesn't keep 3000 meter records but I am betting these would make a top 20 all-time for Washingtonians. The best ever 3000 meter Steeplechase is 8:23 by Karl Van Calcar. Comparing the 3000 to the 3000 Steeple there is about a 30 seconds difference with the barriers. That would put Andrew and Tylor in the top 10 - 12 of the Steeple list.

College Picks

I have heard of a few college choices made by GSL seniors.

Nathan Weitz (Shadle Park) signed a letter of intent to attend Northern Arizona University.

Hunter Johnson (Mt. Spokane) has decided to go to Lewis & Clark State.

Katie Morris (Shadle Park) is heading to Seattle Pacific.

The senior girls from LC haven't decided yet.

Haven't heard anything about the other seniors in the league.

Where are the Spokane kids going?

My first impression of enrollment numbers was that most of the GSL schools were losing students (except CV, Uhi, and LC.) So I wanted to find if there was a shift out to the suburbs by comparing the numbers from 2009. Here is what I found for schools from GSL, GNL, and a few other Spokane area schools...

The first think I noticed was that the area only grew by 27 students, which doesn't even keep pace with population growth, so there are more families moving to smaller schools (1A and B), or they are moving out of the area, or more students are dropping out, or they are being home schooled.

Generally the shift appears to be to the north in Mead, and to the east in Spokane Valley.

The Spokane Public School (District 81) that grew was Shadle Park. I talked to officials from Rogers and North Central and there are waiting lists to transfer to Shadle from NC and Rogers

I was surprised by the mass Exodus from EV. Are those students going to WV and Mt. Spokane?

I was also surprised by Colville's huge increase (no idea what's going on there) and by the decrease in the suburb schools (Lakeside, Riverside, and Medical Lake.)

The CBBN Breaks-up!

The Columbia Basin-Big Nine League is breaking into two leagues. The Tri-Cities schools and Walla Walla have decided to break away from the long-time league. No specfic reason was given for the break-up, but an article in the Tri-cities Herald sited the Tri-Cities schools could not come to an agreement with the Yakima Schools over the splitting of the league into a north and south division.

What does this mean for the GSL? Who knows? The Tri-Cities schools could decide to continue Regionals with the GSL for 3A and 4A, which would be great becasue the numbers of schools in both leagues and classifications would be same. However, they could decide to align with the old CBBN for Regionals, but that would only help the 4A schools because there is only 1 3A schools left in the Old CBBN. They could decide not continue with Regionals at all and just keep thier 1 allocation. Or maybe all three leagues could come together for Regionals, which would be simialar to west side teams that often combine multiple leagues into regions.

Butch Walter the AD from CV said that "We will discuss Regionals at State AD's convention in April." He indicated that Regionals in any format (or if Regionals were to continue) wouldn't be decided until the begining of May.

Any word yet on how Katie, Nathan and Andrew did in Scotland. The website doesn't have any results yet. Maybe some local fan should start up the "Rotten Hagis" blog to cover XC in Edinburgh. :-)

It really cool that 3 of the 12 US junior competitors are from Spokane. Nathan and Andrew are the only high school runners on the Jr. Men's team.

Rotten Tea 2011 XC Awards: Winners

Girls:
Animal of the Year: Katie Knight – Every week Katie would go out and put the hammer down regardless of competition or circumstance. Her State performance was inspiring!

Break-on-Through: Gracie Ledwidth – Gracie’s improvement from a mid-pack runner to an elite runner was instrumental in LC’s league championship and 4th place State finish.

Rookie of the Year: Cyra Carlson – Cyra, the team leader for the Bullpups gets the nod in close competition with her 33rd place at State.

Team of the Year: The award goes to GSL Champs, and State 4th place trophy winner, Lewis & Clark

Break-on-Through Team: At the first meet of the year, University showed they were a much improved team and they continued to get better all season. They just missed knocking of Shadle at Districts and qualifying for Regionals.

Coach of the Year: Mark Vandine – Coach Vandine was able to motivate and keep healthy his group of experienced seniors and youngsters.

Boys:
Animal of the Year: Nathan Weitz – Competition for this award was fierce (which is fitting!) Andrew Gardner had it sown up during the regular season, beating Nathan in their league dual and smashing records wherever he raced. In the post-season Nathan showed his grit digging down for top 3 finishes at State, Border Clash, Footlocker West, and Footlocker Nationals.

Break-on-Through: Sam Holland – This was the most competitive category this season! The award goes to Sam for the amount of improvement but more importantly the impact his improvement had on his team’s success.

Rookie of the Year: John Dressel – From the start and throughout the season John was the favorite to win “Rookie of the Year” but Tanner Anderson closed the gap every race. At State John finished 6 places and 10 seconds ahead of Tanner then at NXN Regionals John finished 1 place - .2 of a second ahead of Tanner. The Dressel – Anderson duel will be very exciting the next three years.

Team of the Year: North Central – Another GSL title, NXN title, and top 7 NXN finish in the books for NC.

Break-on-Through Team: Central Valley – Both Mt. Spokane and University were able to re-load to exceed expectations, but I felt CV made the biggest strides this year finishing 5th in the league then 5th at State. I wasn’t expecting their break-through this year so they far exceeded expectations.

Coach of the Year: Kieran Mahoney – Coach Mahoney inspired his sophomores to take on leadership roles and his veterans to race consistently, which he parlayed into a trip to State, a second consecutive Frosh Championship, and a 2nd place JV finish.

The success of the GSL Boys' XC teams at the national level as become so commonplace that teams don't even garner a nomination for "Jr Male Team of the Year" by the local Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters

Here is the list of nominees for that category, please the note the absence of North Central XC!!! A team that won State for the 6th consecutitve time, NXN Regionals for the 5th consecutive time, and finsihed 7th in the Nation!!! Now i'm sure these other teams listed had great season but were they the best in the northwest? how would those Idaho teams stack up against the best teams in Washington and Oregon? Were any those teams ranked in the nation?

Male Team

Coeur d’Alene football – The Vikings compiled a 13-0 season to claim their second straight Idaho 5A state championship.

Coeur d’Alene wrestling – The Vikings didn’t have an individual champion, but depth led them to their second straight Idaho 5A title.

Deer Park wrestling – The Stags continued domination of State 2A competition, last year winning their fourth tournament title in a row.

Gonzaga Prep basketball – The Bullpups had placed – never higher than third – in state five times in school history until last season’s 23-3 state title season.

North Central track – Coached by Kelly Walters, the Indians captured their fourth straight State 3A championship.

Side note: Jon Knight was nominated for "Coach of the Year", Katie Knight and Baylee Mires for "Female Athlete of the Year", and Kenji Bierig and Nathan Weitz for "Male Athlete of the year."

Dave Trimmer a long time writer for the Spokesman Review is retiring. He said he was done at the end of the year (so I guess that would be today.) Trim, as he calls himself, covered high school track for many-many years, and added cross-country coverage the last two years. As a blogger, and "reporter" for MileSplit I used him a resource often, especially in conducting interviews with athletes. I would just watch,listen and learn when he talked to kids, and coaches.

Dave's love of sports and enthusiasm will be missed by coaches, athletes, and bloggers. You are always welcome to contribute to Rotten Tea if the get the writing itch.

Rotten Tea 2011 XC Awards: Boys' Nominees

Animal of the Year:
Andrew Gardner – Mead: Andrew was a beast in 2011, smashing records on nearly every course he raced including Audubon’s 18 year old record and Mt. West’s and beating all GSL competitors. He finished 2nd at State to East Region rival Jacob Smith then took a break not racing at NXN Regionals or Border Clash. After the break he returned finishing 6th at Footlocker Nationals.

Hunter Johnson – Mt. Spokane: Hunter has always been a tough a racer from the moment he set foot on Mt. Spokane’s campus, but this year his desire, enthusiasm, and ferocity were very apparent in every race. He showed no fear taking the leaders and pushing the pace all in his quest to lead the team to State. He capped off his high school career with a 7th place finish at State.

Kai Wilmot – North Central: Kai exemplified the “working class” runner this season; he was not one of the flashy front runners in the league and region getting all the headlines and national rankings (Gardner, Weitz, Smith, and Armstrong.) He just went about his businesses every week...competing with the State’s elite and leading NC to a 7th place finish at NXN.

Nathan Weitz – Shadle Park: The senior from Shadle raced with confidence and poise this year picking his battles. He and Jacob Smith pushed each other at Sun Dodger with Nathan getting the win and the course record. He struggled a little mid-season but came storming back in the post season where you could see the fight and determination in his face. He raced Anthony Armstrong stride for stride at State just being out leaned at the tape. He and Armstrong were joined in another sprint finish by Iziac Yorks at Border Clash; this time slipping to third in the final few steps. In the finale at Footlocker he ran an inspired last mile to finish 3rd (was the top American runner.)

Sumner Goodwin – Lewis & Clark: With the graduation of superstar Kenji Bierig, LC was looking for a frontrunner to take his place...Sumner accepted and completed that challenge leading the Tigers in 2011. He had a strong performance at Mt. West finishing 4th as the second best Washingtonian, but he really showed competitive chops at Sunfair finishing 7th alongside the top runners in the northwest. He followed that with 7th place at State.

Break-on-Through
Corey Hunter – Central Valley: High expectations were put on the 2010 Frosh champ to give CV that frontrunner they needed. Corey stepped up not only meet but exceed those expectations leading the upstart Bears to a 5th place finish at State with his 26th place.

Jacob Vandenberg – Mt. Spokane: 2010: Jacob’s improvement (along with his teammates’) was the catalyst in the Cats run toward State Meet in 2011. He finished 25th in the Frosh race in 2010 and 42nd at State in 2011. His times improved significantly from 2010 to 2011; at Mt. West he improved nearly two minutes, and a Richland 1:29.

Kai Wilmot – North Central: Kai’s improvement was often overlooked partly because he was a varsity veteran in 2010, and because he had an outstanding track season, but when you look more closely the improvement was impressive. As a Frosh in ran 16:37 at Tracy Walters in 2010 and improved 59 seconds in 2011. At State he finished 38th in 2010 and finished 8th in 2011. He became a consistent team leader in 2011, which was instrumental for NC in 2011.

Kees von Michalofski – Mt. Spokane: Kees was also member of Mt. Spokane team that had great improvement in their surprising 2011 season. He finished 7th in the 2010 Frosh race but then stepped up 2011 often racing with Frosh Superstar John Dressel giving the Cats a strong 2-3 punch. He started the season with a bang (no pun intended) winning the sophomore race at Meadlander.

Nick Hauger – Shadle Park: I saw Nick for the first time at Eric Anderson where he led the pack that followed a-ways behind Nathan Weitz. He continued to not only lead but pushed the pace finishing second in that race. This was no fluke for the sophomore, who finished 8th in the 2010 Frosh meet, raced #2 for Highlanders often finishing ahead of classmates he was behind in 2010. He peaked at State finishing 23rd in the 3A race.

Sam Holland – North Central: Every year NC has a guy that comes from depths of the Frosh/JV races that causes me to exclaim “Who the bleep is that?”; Well this year Sam Holland is who it is. Two years ago Sam finished 59th in Frosh race running 21:39! Last year he had strong improvement becoming a consistent JV runner finishing in the 17’s and 18’s. This year he burst on the varsity giving NC added depth to a very young team. He finished 18th State, which was huge for NC in the defense of their title.

Rookie of the Year
Andrew Vandine – North Central: Andrew would run on varsity for most of the other teams in league but saw mostly JV/Frosh action, which helped him develop as a cross racer. He won the Frosh All League then would go on to lead NC's #2 Varsity team at NXN Regionals, and NXN Nationals

Britton Demars – Central Valley: Britton also spent his time in the JV/Frosh races giving him experience racing up front. Britton and Andrew Vandine had an epic race at Frosh Districts racing side by side for the entire 5K race; Britton got second but fought every step.

Corbin Carlton – Mead: As a freshman Corbin was called up to race on the Varsity for the Panthers. He did get to race his classmates at Bullpup where he finished 5th ahead of Demars.

John Dressel – Mt. Spokane: Stories of “Dressel’s kid” started leaking out last spring in track, so his arrival wasn’t that much of a surprise this fall. What was a surprise was how much of an impact he had right away. It will usually take freshmen a few races to figure out high school XC but not John. He crushed the competition at Meadlander wining in 13:24 then continued to race with the top veterans in the league. He finished 13th at State as the best freshman in the 3A, and third best overall.

Patrick Miranne – University: Was also another frosh that raced in the JV/Frosh races. He won two GSL JV/Frosh races, and finished 4th in the Moses Lake JV race. He finished 3rd Frosh District Meet.

Tanner Anderson – North Central: Tanner was another surprise for NC in 2011. He was a top JV/Frosh guy early in 2011 then got an opportunity to run on varsity at Richland due to illness and Richland’s 8-man varsity format. He took advantage of that opportunity finishing 4th man for NC and secured his varsity spot for the rest of the season finishing 19th at State.

Team
Central Valley: The Bears saw great success in racing at smaller meets around the state. They finished 2nd at Salt Creek 10 points behind Bellevue and they won Wenatchee and Bullpup. Peaking at the right time, CV finished 3rd at Regionals earning them a trip to State where they finished 5th (the same place they finished in the GSL.)

Mt. Spokane: Rookie Coach Dressel generated lots excitement at Mt. Spokane, which translated into success on the course. Despite losing key seniors last year, they not only re-loaded but improved with underclassmen. They won Mt. West over GSL rivals and Bozeman early in the season then at Districts they held off a strong challenge from U-Hi to qualify for Regionals and State where they missed a podium finish on the sixth runner tie-breaker.

North Central: NC has got it rolling! They started the season ranked 12th in nation with no seniors on the roster but then continued to improve. The won their 6th consecutive State title, 5th consecutive NXN Regional, and finished in the top 7 at NXN for the 5th consecutive year.

University: The Titans also re-loaded after losing like 8 of their top 12 last year finishing 3rd in the GSL in 2011. At Moses Lake they easily dispatched State 2A placer Deer Park with impressive depth. They finished 2nd to Mt. Spo at Mt. West but but continued to close the gap on the Cats throughout the season falling just short at Districts by 6 points, and missing 2nd a second place GSL finish by a point.

Break on Through Team
Central Valley: The Bears finished 7th in 2010 and were predicted to finish in the same spot in 2011. After a slow start they came on strong in October beating Mead in their final dual causing a tie for 5th place, finishing 3rd at Regionals, and finishing 5th at State.

Mt. Spokane: The Cats were predicted to finish 6th in the GSL in 2011; they finished 2nd in the GSL and 5th at State.

University: The Titans were predicted to finish 5th in the GSL this year; finished 3rd just missing 2nd by a point.

Coach of the Year:
Alex Dressel – Mt. Spokane: The first year Coach motivated his young team to a 2nd place GSL and 4th place State finishes.

Jon Knight – North Central: Coach Knight again was able to re-load after losing key varsity members from the 2010 squad and guide his team to another NXN top 7 finish.

Kieran Mahoney – Central Valley: The Pied Piper of Veradale has persuaded over 70 boys to turn out for XC at CV and inspired them to continually improve throughout the season culminating with a 5th place finish at State.

Mike Barbero – University: The Titans were 3A runners-up in 2010 with 5 seniors on varsity. Coach B (the younger) was able to guide his blended team of veterans and rookies to a 3rd place GSL finish.

Here are nomination for the Rotten Tea XC Awards, I name the winners shortly after the New Year. Enjoy!

Animal of the Year:

Katie Knight – North Central: The much decorated junior from NC took her racing to another level in 2011. Katie put the hammer down every time she stepped on the course leaving competitors and course records in her wake including Audubon, Firman, and State.

Kendra Weitz – Shadle Park: Despite her ups and down Kendra showed she is still a fierce competitor. The junior pulled away from 4:42 miler Maddie Meyers in the last mile of Sun Dodger to get the win. She finished 3rd at Sunfair to Amy-Eloise Neal and Katie Knight showing no fear by racing with her superstar classmates.

Molly Cole – Mt. Spokane: As a senior, Molly stepped up to lead the Wildcats (or ran #2) in their journey to return to State where they placed eighth. She capped her XC career by finishing in the top 10 at Richland and Regionals; and winning the dual meet vs. League Champions LC.

Break-on-Through: (Most Improved – I look for more than just time and place, but improvement in competitive levels; JV/Frosh to Varsity, mid-pack varsity to front pack….)

Elizabeth Smith – University: Elizabeth did not waste any time showing her improvement from her 2010 3rd place frosh finish by placing 2nd at All-Valley and leading the Titans. She improved a whopping 101 places at Mt. West from 2010 to 2011. More importantly her improvement inspired her team’s improvement.

Emma Voigtlaender – Mead: In the 2010 season Emma finished 7th in the Frosh Race. In 2011 she was a mainstay for the Panthers varsity improving her time on every course by nearly a minute. She finished 27th at Regionals 20:26 running 3rd for Mead.

Gracie Ledwith LC: As a freshman in 2010 Gracie was no stranger to varsity competition finishing 55th at Regionals but she broke-through to become an elite runner in 2011 finishing 13th at Regionals, and 36th at State for the 4th place Tigers.

Michaela Lindley – Shadle Park: A part-time JV, part-time varsity runner in 2010 Michaela finished 11th at JV Districts and 129th at State. She stepped up another level in 2011 planting herself on Shadle’s varsity that qualified for State where she finished 85th improving her time by 1:49.

Rookie of the Year:
Cyra Carlson – Gonzaga: The frosh from Gonzaga was a factor from the start for the Bullpup leading them for most the season. Cyra was the top GSL runner at Bullpup in 3rd place, 2nd best frosh at 4A Regionals and placed 33rd in her first State Meet.

Gabi Gomez-Wint and Lauren Dunnell – Shadle Park: The Highlanders were a little beat up with injury and illness during the season, but this provided an opportunity for Gabbi and Lauren to get valuable varsity experience as freshmen running in the 3-4 spots often running side-by-side. The duo had a huge breakthrough at the 3A District meet finishing 13th and 14th and giving Shadle the edge over University. At State Gabi led the Highlanders with her 48th place finish and Lauren finished 66th.

Dannie Baird – Lewis & Clark: After a slow start, the frosh from LC was a solid varsity runner for the GSL Champs, LC. She often ran #5 girl, behind the “four-headed monster” that led LC (Cali Vanderwilde, Gracie Ledwith, Hannah Allen, and Allison Keenan.) Her 46th place at State was instrumental in the Tiger’s 4th place finish.

Ashlie Standow and Courney Sherick – University: Ashlie and Courtney as a junior and a sophomore burst on to the scene at All Valley finished 3rd and 4th in their very first XC race behind State placer McCall Skay from WV, and Uhi Break-on-through nominee Elizabeth Smith. The two rookies (along with Smith) fueled the resurgent Titans often racing as a trio. Courtney finished 8th and Ashlie finished 12th at Regional earning the two a trip to State.

Katie Mikkelson - Gonzaga: After showing consistent improvement throughout the season Katie had a huge breakthrough in the final GSL dual winning the JV race in 20:46. She apparently liked winning so much she continued the next week at Frosh District winning in 21:16.

Team of the Year:
Central Valley: The Bears continue to be one of the top teams in the GSL and State year after year, this year was no different. They finished 3rd at Sun Dodger behind Snohomish, and Jackson; won Wenatchee; and finished 4th at Richland. The capped off their season with a 3rd place at Regionals, and earned their 7th straight trip to State where they finished 8th.

Lewis & Clark: The Tigers showed early that they are ready to race the best taking on nationally and state ranked teams at Tracy Walters finishing 6th just behind 4A power Eastlake. They continued to show their strength by finishing 3rd at South Whidbey behind Glacier Peak and Eisenhower. The Tigers peaked at the right time dispatching CV in the final dual to win GSL Title, finishing 2nd at Regionals, and earning a 4th place trophy at State.

Mt. Spokane: Inspired racing from Molly Cole, Brooklin Young, and Kelley Duchow was the catalyst in Cat’s season where they knocked off LC at Richland and won the 3A District title Shalde, Uhi, and NC. They finished 3rd at Regional earning a trip to Pasco where they finished 9th.

Shadle Park: Highlanders showed great tenacity this season working through injury and illness to finish 2nd at Regionals and getting back to State where they finished 11th.

Break-on-Through Team (The most improved team or the team that exceeded expectations):

Lewis & Clark: The senior dominated Tigers were able to stay healthy and peak at right time winning the GSL title and finishing 4th at State. I predicted LC would be 4th in the GSL

Mt. Spokane: I predicted that Mt. Spokane would finish 3rd in the league, which they did by trying with Shaldle at 6-3. The Cats really broke-through at Richland finishing 6th at Richland behind the top teams in the State. The then went on to win the 3A District Meet by over Shadle.

University: The 3 – 6 record of the Titans does not show the improvement in racing of Titans this year. They went out and raced every team, scaring quite a few of them along the way. At District they missed going to Regionals by 3 points.

Coach of the Year: (including their staffs of course)
Dennis McGuire: Coach McGuire continues to re-load year after year getting the Bears to compete for a GSL a title and berth to State.

Holly Weiler: Coach Weilier was able to inspire the Titans to tremendous improvement this season turning them into contenders.

Mark Vandine: Coach Vandine was able to keep his 2011 squad of seniors blended with youngstes healthy and continuing to improve on their way to a podium finish at State.

That was one of the best races I've ever seen! Edward Cheserek and Fustum Zeinasellassie ran stride for stride at Foot Locker Nations with Cheserek slipping ahead of Futsum in the last 50 meters. Nathan Weitz and Andrew Gardner ran a great last mile to finish 3rd and 6th! Great job Nathan and Andrew!

Andrew you looked great in orange, all you need is a flying WV on that orange singlet! (Nathan you looked good too, as good as your Dad did, but you are a senior) :-)

There is still one race left in the 2011 season, Foot Locker Nationals next week December 10th in San Diego. Nathan Weitz, and Andrew Garder will be racing.

After the race next week I will post Rotten Tea's 2011 XC Award Nominees (Animal of the Year could come down to that race; no pressure Nathan and Andrew.) :-) Then after the new year I'll will announce the winners.

Also after the new year I'll look post a schedule of indoor meets, and results of those meets.

If I hear any news I'll be sure to post that.

Finally, I plan to run from each of schools this winter and write about it, so could you give me your favorite 4 - 5 miler from school?

NXN at-large Qualifiers: The NW gets passed over again

Nike announced the at-large qualifiers to Nike Cross Nationals today, and despite being the top performing Region in the 7 years history of NXN the Northwest gets ignored...again.

The top 2 teams from each of the Regions automatically qualify for NXN and a committee selects four other teams. The teams must place 3rd or 4th at NXN Regionals and have beaten an automatic qualifier sometime during the season. Seattle Prep met these requirements finishing 3rd at NXN Northwest with 148 points (40 behind Gig Harbor, 53 behind NC) and beating Gig Harbor at Sun Dodger (Gig Harbor was without #1 runner Wolfgang Beck.)

The committee went with two teams from California, one from the Midwest, and one from Northeast.

Palatine XC Club (Palantine HS - IL): 3rd at NXN MW with 174 points (20 behind York, 55 behind Columbus North)

Santa Clarita XC Club (Golden Valley HS - CA): California DII Champion with 86 points

Rancho Cucamonga XC Club (Rancho Cucamonga HS - CA): 3rd place California DIII with 124 points (37 behind Arcadia, 53 behind Trabuco Hills)

Westfield XC Club (Westfield HS - NJ): 3rd at NXN NE with 124 points (7 behind Pembroke, 86 behind Christian Brothers Academy)

I agree with the decision to go with the California schools, however I think that Seattle Prep should have been picked over Westfield and Palantine. They have scared NC a couple of times and beaten Gig Harbor. Also, they would finish higher in my "Virtual NXN." I also would have went with Fort Collins, CO as the 4th pick.

Turkey Trot

Come out on Thanksgiving morning to support the 2nd Harvest Food Bank by making a donation of food or money, and running in the Turkey Trot!!!

It is great fun, you chose to run a 3 or 5 mile course that winds around Manito Park. You will get to visit with coaches, GSL runners past, present, and future. Afterwards they have a drawing where you could win awesome prizes including homemade cinnamon roles just like Olympian Don Kardong does every year (cough - rigged - coughed.)

It is a long time distance running tradition in Spokane! The Trot start at 9:00 am by the duck pond at Manito.

This morning Coach Blankenship and I were slogging down the Centennial trail on our weekly Sunday run. As usual we were debating loudly the XC topic of the week. This week we were discussing not allowing schools to opt up. We were just trotting talking loudly then out of nowhere a group of guys speeds past us with “Ship” on the back of their warm-ups; they were followed closely by the women. “Ship” was the XC team from Shippensburg Pennsylvania in town for the NCAA DII Championships out for their morning run. Included in this group was the NCAA women’s Champion Neely Spence. This team and Neely could take the day off to celebrate after their last meet of season but instead they are out there less than 24 hours after the finale...running again. This is dedication!

Seeing them reminded me a similar story of a legendary high school runner from Spokane. Coach Barbero was on a return flight from San Francisco with a group of runners that competed in the Footlocker National Meet in sunny California. Sitting next to “B” was former Mead great Rob Aubrey. As the plane descended late on a Sunday evening Rob looked out the window and “sighed” when he saw the frozen runway of Spokane International Airport. B asked “what’s the sigh for?” Rob replied “I have to get up and run in few hours.” B then quizzed “your XC season is done, aren’t you going to take some time off?” Rob then informed B “I haven’t missed a morning run in over two years, so I’ve got to get up and run...”

Mary Rogers (Shadle Park) the junior from Western Washington finished 114th with a 23:52(6K) DII action right in Spokane at Plante's Ferry Park.

Andrew Wordell (NC) is a freshman at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, he and his team raced in the DII race held in Winneconne Wisconsin, Andrew Finished 233rd with a 26:08 8K

The DI championship will be held on Monday, WSU received an at large bid, with NC's Andy Kimpel leading the way. Tylor Thatcher (from CV) has raced for the BYU Cougar at times during the season and could be in action on Monday.

Lukas Verzbicas quits running...kind of

Lukas Verzbicas the high school superstar and college freshman left the University of Oregon last week to focus on competing in the triathlon. A sport in which he won the gold medal at the World Jr. Championship in September. Verzbicas is arguably the best high-school runner in U.S. history setting a National 2-mile record at 8:29, and running Sub-4:00 in mile at 3:59.71. He is also the only Nike Cross National and Footlocker National winner in history.

I was ready to write a scathing post but thought about the fact that this is an 18 year old kid. I'm sure I made questionable decisions when I was 18, so I thought I would give him a break.

I will say, that I am disappointed in Lukas for leaving his Oregon team a week before West Regionals. He ran in Pac 12 Championships on October 29th then packed up for Colorado and announced on November 10th that he would be leaving Oregon just two days before Regionals. That is not cool!!! He couldn't wait a few weeks for the season to be done?

I also wonder who is advising young Lukas in making this move right now. His parents wanted him to stay at Oregon.

Here are some quotes from an interview with the Chicago Tribune, which might provide some insight into his motivation.

"I was really set on running," he said during a lengthy telephone conversation. "But it took a lot of time for me to realize what I was best at.”

"As a triathlete, I could really make an impact for the sport and only have good things happen. As a runner, I don't know. Maybe I could be in the top 20 in the world, maybe the top 10, but I wouldn't make such an impact.”

"Maybe I could be the best in the nation," he said. "I don't know how I will feel later, but I can't see myself now running a 2:03 marathon or a 12:35 for 5,000, which is what it would take to be the top world level."

NXR Northwest – Summary and some Random Thoughts

North Central was able to edge out Gig Harbor by 13, the duo of Kai Wilmot and Keith Williams led the way with their 8th and 15th place finishes. Kai was the top runner from Spokane, he was able to get by sophomore rival Wolfgang Beck from Gig Harbor, but fell just short of Prep’s Joe Hardy; look for great races from those three in the next two years. Austen Frostad is returning to early season form with his 29th place finish.

NC doesn't have any seniors in the top 14.

The super Frosh John Dressel from Mt. Spokane, and Tanner Anderson from NC finished .2 of a second apart, they were both 5 seconds behind classmate Tristan Peloquin from Gig. Again look for these three to battle it out for the next three years.

Andrew Vandine also a frosh from NC could join the trio in years to come. He finished 11th in the Varsity Open race with a 17:00. That time would have put him right behind teammate Isaac Kitzan in the Championship race.

Deer Park looked impressive with the 1-2 finish of Dayde Collins, and Dan Amann. The Stags finished 2nd to 4A school Walla Walla.

Equally impressive was NC in the Varsity Open race with their 5th place finish. This is NC’s JV and they finished behind Walla Walla (a top 10 4A school), Deer Park (3rd in 2A), Rocky Mountain (JV), and Mountain View (2nd in Idaho 5A) but beat lots of other school's varsity teams.

Katie and Camas poked the Bear. Last week Katie Knight got the win over rival Amy-Eloise Neale, and Camas got the 2 point win over Glacier Peak for the team title. These losses definitely woke up the Grizzlies; Amy won the Championship race in CR time and led her team to a slight upset over Bozeman to finish second and earn a trip to Portland

Paybacks: Mt Spokane beat Bellevue; Central Valley beat Wenatchee

It was nice to see the return of Austen Middleton from Mt. Spo; he was one of the Cat’s top JV guys who missed the JV District. He finished second in the JV race yesterday and led his team to a 4th finish.

NC had teams in all three boys’ races.

I was a little surprised that Ferris (except Kimsey), Mead, LC (except Goodwin), and University boys and LC girls chose not to make the trip to Boise.

Props to CV and Mt. Spokane boys for making the trip and racing with the best in the NW!

Why are the Midwest and Heartland Regions racing today on Sunday???

NC Makes it 5!

North Central remained the only team to win NXR Regionals, winning their 5th consecutive title today in Boise with 95 points. Kai Wilmot finished 8th and Keith Williams 13th.

Gig Harbor will join NC as Automatic qualifiers to Nike Cross Nationals on December 2nd in Portland by finishing 2nd with 108 points. Gig is the first boys' team from western Washington to earn a trip to Nationals. Seattle Prep finished 3rd and will be in running for an at large berth.

Summit from Oregon won the girls team title followed by Glacier Peak.
